Regulation of cosmetics
The TGA assesses cosmetic products that make therapeutic claims. Many ingredients in cosmetic products are classed as industrial chemicals and the National Industrial Chemicals Notification Assessment Scheme (NICNAS) must be notified of all cosmetics that contain industrial chemicals new to Australia.
If you have an enquiry about the regulation of cosmetics that is not answered by this website, please see the contact details below.
November 2005: The Australian Government endorsed the reform of cosmetic regulation in Australia including the establishment of new NICNAS Cosmetic Guidelines. The Final Report and Recommendations for regulating cosmetic chemicals in Australia (available from the NICNAS Internet site) is consistent with the Government's commitment to regulatory best practice.
